Cancelling does not cut you off immediately. You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for, so if you have decided not to renew you can cancel straight away without losing anything.
Check how much space you are using before dropping to free. Basic is far smaller than the paid plans, and anything over the limit will break syncing.
Subscriptions bought inside the mobile app have to be cancelled in the App Store or Google Play; you cannot cancel them on the Dropbox website.
Cancelling drops you to the free Dropbox Basic tier at the end of the current billing period — not immediately.
