Cancelling does not cut you off immediately. You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for, so if you have decided not to renew you can cancel straight away without losing anything.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
Work out who is actually charging you first. HBO Max can be billed through Apple, Google Play, a telecom or a cable provider, and each of those has to be cancelled where you signed up — not on the HBO Max site. The name on your bill or card statement is the answer.
