Cancelling does not cut you off immediately. You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for, so if you have decided not to renew you can cancel straight away without losing anything.
Turning off recurring billing is enough — you do not have to delete the subscription. Nothing more is charged and you keep access until the end date.
Cancelling within 30 days of your first purchase is refundable; even if the next period has already been charged, cancelling within 30 days of that charge gets it back.
You can also cancel on the console: Settings → “Account” → “Subscriptions”.
